Zorkin Block
418 Fitzwilliam Street, Nanaimo BC
This building, located at the corner of Fitzwilliam and Richards Street, was constructed in 1931. At various times it housed Safeway, the public health department and the police station. In 1961 Mladen Zorkin purchased the building. It is now known as the “Zorkin Block” and the old jail cells are still intact. For many years it was the site of Zorkin Insurance Brokers. In 2012 over $100,000 was spent renovating the exterior of the building, making it a beautiful landmark for the Old City Quarter.
Fitzwilliam Centre
405 Fitzwilliam Street, Nanaimo, BC
Fitzwilliam Centre is a heritage landmark built in 1910/11 in Nanaimo’s Old City Quarter. The building has gone through many uses but is still essentially used for the original purpose: retail stores on the street level and apartments upstairs. The building went through a heritage restoration program in the 1980s that brought it back up to its original stately presence. This program won the City of Nanaimo’s restoration award for 1995. The six retail locations range in size from 450 sq ft to 1200 sq ft. The large character apartments upstairs have undergone some renovations but mostly have maintained a lot of their character making them a very popular place to call home! ww
Fitzwilliam Gate

Fitzwilliam Gate was built in 1994/95 as a landmark feature of Nanaimo’s Old City Quarter. The development fronts on Fitzwilliam Street, part of the Third Street Connector to the Nanaimo Parkway bypass. Based on the architectural design of the Burlington Arcade at the end of Saville Row in London, England, Fitzwilliam Gate is a two-storied glass covered walkway atrium. The main street level houses six retail locations and the second floor is designed for office space with separate street entrances. Fitzwilliam Gate was awarded the City of Nanaimo’s 1996 Old City Gateway design award. The building is approximately 5000 square feet on each floor and is home to many long term retail and professional services.
